Why Does the Door Drop Open After a New Custom Panel?
Short answer
Usually the springs and the new panel are out of balance. A panel-ready Viking's side springs pull against the door and its front; a panel heavier or larger than the model allows wins. The limits, model by model
The VDWU524 manual allows a custom door of at most 19 lb (9 kg), 30 in high, 23 1/4 to 23 1/2 in wide and 3/4 in thick. The DFUD042 takes a front of up to 22 lb (9.9 kg), 23 1/2 by 29 3/4 in and 3/4 in thick. Over those numbers, change the panel, not the springs.
When it is not the panel
A door that drops after a snap, or feels slack on one side only, points to a broken spring or a worn hinge pivot, covered on the door hinges and springs page.
Tell your contractor
- Weigh the finished panel, handle fitted, before it goes on and hold it to the exact model's limit.
- Cut the front to the model's height and width, not to match the drawers beside it.
When to call
Call once the panel is on and the door will not hold half-open, snaps shut from low down, or pulls harder on one side. The springs are under tension; leave them to the technician.
